[Monsters of my Childhood]

While I was doing additional research for my Mapping project of last term,I decided to remember my childhood and little cartoon characters I used to fancy.First thing I remembered was cute series of famous "Skelanimals".Despite the fact they are dead, showing of skeleton and stuff they are still cute.Back then I remember having a lot of stuff like keyrings, stuffed animals,t-shirts,notepads and pens with these pretty little monsters.

Second thing that I remembered was "Uglydoll" by David Horvath and Sun-Min Kim.I bought my first toy at The Design Museum around 5 years ago, while I was attending short summer course at St Martins.I just fell in love with it and took it home,so adorable it was.Sometimes I still see these toys in some museum stores. Those toys are not scary-they are adorable, bright, but they are still monsters. This dissonance makes you kinda feel sorry for the toy's ugliness and love it even more, imperfect things are always the prettiest.

The last thing that I brought back from my memories was "Happy Three Friends" series by Mondo Mini Shows.Basically, it is a series of short (2-7 minutes) cartoons about cute forest animals.Anatomically they are drawn right, making funny noises and smiling all the way, untill someone puts pen in other's eye, smash them in the face by accident or cut themself some part of the body.By mistake.
Remembering myself back then,me and my classmates really enjoyed these "funny" cartoons along with thousands of other children.I decided to watch a few episodes to refresh my mind and felt pure disguse. How could we watch this? It's horrible, violent and kind of abnormal.A lot of adults say that they show these to their children;no wonder that a lot of kids are violent. Each day kids receive as much of information as we couldn't get for weeks or months a few years ago,all thanks to internet. All this stuff bring a thought that we seriously overload our minds with useless information, leaving no space for our own thoughts...
But yup, here are some episodes of "Happy Tree Friends".Enjoy! (?)

[Tim Burton - Vincent]

“and my soul from out that shadow
that lies floating on the floor
shall be lifted?
Nevermore…”
While I was doing research for my project,I was looking through scary, dark and strange things.Of course, there was no way I could miss Tim Burton's works.I can't say I am a huge fan of him,but his talent is undeniable and his works are a great source of inspiration all the time.

Last year I bought a book with collection of short poems that he wrote himself. Each story had an illustration, and while I was doing the research I also found small vinyl figures which were made based on these stories.I really enjoyed reading this small sketches, even my little sister, who is 7,got interested, but i decided it's not really apropriate for a girl of her age haha...

Last seshion at uni we were discussing our project and my classmate adviced me to watch "Vincent".This work is one of the earliest creations of Tim Burton.

The cartoon is done in classical "Burton" style,if you know what I mean :) While watching it,I felt strangeness and darkness of the story, even though I didn't really felt scared or uneasy. The character is an innocent child,he has a good family, animals love him and he enjoys playing his violyn, but on the inside boy is going crazy. His imagination goes way too far:he imagines himself as a full grownup actor Vincent Price(who is also a narrator of the story),who likes experimenting in making wax figures out of a living creature, and tries to be a Frankenstein having experiments on his own puppy. He is obsessed with stories of  Edgar Allan Poe,and his delusions make him believe that he is a tortured artist. In the end all fantasies of Vincent come and "get" him,and he falls uncoscious on the floor, believing himself to be dead.Quite a vivid imagination for a 7 yr old boy huh...
